About Steel Prices UK
Steel Prices UK(steelprices.co.uk) provides live UK scrap steel and stainless steel prices, updated daily from scrap yards across the country. We cover 8 steel grades including HMS 1, HMS 2, light iron, cast iron, plate & structural, and three stainless steel grades (316, 304, and mixed).
Who We Are
Steel Prices UK was created by Taro Schenker, a metals market researcher with over 15 years of experience investing in and analysing precious and base metals markets. Taro also founded:
- UK Metal Prices — the UK's comprehensive scrap metal price resource covering copper, aluminium, steel, brass, lead, and zinc across 36 grades
- London Gold Exchange — one of the UK's most comprehensive precious metals price and dealer resources, with a verified database of 242+ UK gold dealers
How Our Prices Work
Our steel pricing data comes from three layers, each adding depth and accuracy:
- CFR Turkey Benchmark — UK ferrous scrap prices track the Platts TSI HMS 1/2 (80:20) CFR Turkey price, the global reference for ferrous scrap. We derive this daily from our aggregated yard data.
- UK Scrap Yard Prices— we collect published buy prices from scrap yards across the UK daily, covering all major regions from London & the South East to Scotland. These show what yards actually pay the public.
- Calculated Estimates — where direct yard data isn't available for a grade, we estimate using the relationship between the benchmark price and industry-standard discount factors per grade.
Our Data Sources
We currently aggregate steel prices from 8 UK scrap yard sources across 6 regions. Our automated scraper runs daily and stores every price point, building a historical dataset. We never republish a single yard's exact price list — all prices shown are national averages across multiple sources.
Data is sourced from publicly available scrap yard price pages. We comply with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 and credit our data sources appropriately. For more detail on our approach, see our price disclaimer.
Stainless Steel Pricing
Stainless steel grades (316, 304, mixed) are priced differently from ferrous steel. Their value is driven by LME nickel prices rather than the CFR Turkey benchmark. We fetch daily nickel spot prices from the London Metal Exchange and apply grade-specific discount factors calibrated against real yard pricing.
