How the Calculator Works

Our calculator uses the latest national average prices from UK scrap yards. We aggregate pricing data from multiple yards across the UK to calculate a fair market estimate.

The estimate shows a range because actual prices vary based on your location, the quantity you're selling, the condition of the material, and the specific yard's pricing on that day. Yards in areas with more competition typically offer better prices.

For the most accurate quote, contact your local scrap yard directly with details of the grade, weight, and condition of your steel.

Tips for Getting the Best Steel Price

1. Sort your steel by grade. Separating HMS 1 from light iron can increase your total payout by 20-30%. Yards pay less for mixed loads because they have to sort it themselves.

2. Remove non-metal attachments. Rubber, plastic, wood, and concrete reduce the value. Clean steel with minimal contamination gets better prices.

3. Sell in larger quantities. Most yards offer better per-kg rates for larger loads. If you have a small amount, consider accumulating more before selling.

4. Compare multiple yards. Prices can vary 10-20% between yards in the same area. Call ahead to get quotes before making the trip.

5. Watch the market. Steel prices fluctuate weekly. If the CFR Turkey benchmark is trending up, it may be worth waiting a few days for yard prices to catch up.
